Join us for the angelversary of Stanley Wilson Jr who died in LA County custody on February 1, 2023.Come learn about and demand justice for Stanley’s uncounted in-custody death.Three years later, his family is still waiting for accountability and answers. On February 1, 2023, Stanley Wilson Jr.—a Stanford University graduate and former NFL player—died while in the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD). Despite the legal requirement to report publicly all in-custody deaths, Stanley’s death does not appear in LASD’s online database of in-custody deaths, nor is it listed in the California Correctional Health Care Services database. His omission raises a critical question: Why is he missing from official records? Stanley’s case is not uncommon. Across the United States, nearly 1,000 in-custody deaths went unreported in 2021, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office—a number widely believed to be an undercount. Stanley’s life and death have since catalyzed legislation, generated scholarly and public commentary, and inspired programs dedicated to addressing the crisis of unreported deaths in custody. This event brings together speakers and panelists to examine the systemic failures that allow for the rising numbers of preventable in-custody deaths, the lack of transparancy around accounting for those who are uncounted, the broader realities of mass incarceration, and the California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s lawsuit against LASD for violations of the constitutional rights of both living and deceased individuals in LASD’s custody. We gather to honor the life and legacy of Stanley Wilson Jr., and to amplify the urgent call for transparency, accountability, and justice in LASD and carceral systems across the country.
